GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE OF COUNCIL

Changes in Regulations

The General Purposes Committee of Council has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 8 February.

(a) Regulations relating to Academic Dress made by the Vice-Chancellor, as Authorised by Council

In the Vice-Chancellor's Regulations 1 of 2002 concerning academic dress (Supplement (1) to Gazette No. 4617, 20 March 2002, pp. 909–11), delete existing footnote 3 and substitute:

'3 Women members of the University attending university ceremonies shall either carry a square, or wear a soft cap.'

[This amendment, approved by the Vice-Chancellor, has the effects of preserving the option of the soft cap for women, but requiring that if they opt for the ('mortar board') square, the regulation governing the wearing of it shall be the same for women as it is for men.]

(b) Establishment of Department of Earth Sciences Field Teaching Fund

In Part 2 of Council Regulations 25 of 2002, concerning trusts (Statutes, 2000, p. 628, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), insert new § 91 as follows, and renumber existing §§ 91–6 (pp. 628–31) as §§ 92–7:

'§ 91. The Department of Earth Sciences Field Teaching Fund

1. The benefaction from an anonymous donor which comprises the sum of £12,000, together with any further donations for this purpose, shall be known as the Department of Earth Sciences Field Teaching Fund ('the Fund').

2. The University shall apply the Fund to provide support for students and teaching in respect of any aspect of fieldwork related to geology in the Department of Earth Sciences.

3. The administration of the Fund, and the application of its capital and income, shall be the responsibility of the Department of Earth Sciences, which shall appoint a committee with delegated authority to discharge this responsibility on its behalf.

4. Regulation 3 above may be amended by Council.'

[This change in regulations, made on the recommendation of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board, establishes a fund using a donation from an anonymous donor, to support the teaching of undergraduate or postgraduate students in the Department of Earth Sciences in any aspect of field geology.]

(c) Establishment of Pantin Fund

In Part 2 of Council Regulations 25 of 2002, concerning trusts (Statutes, 2000, p. 704, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), insert new § 267 as follows and renumber existing §§ 267–83 as §§ 268–84:

'§ 267. Pantin Fund

1. The residue of the benefaction from Dr W.A. Pantin, together with any further donations for this purpose, shall be known as the Pantin Fund.

2. The University shall apply the Fund towards the achievement of the objectives of the University Archives.

4. Regulations 1 and 3 above may be amended by Council.'

PLANNING AND RESOURCE ALLOCATION COMMITTEE OF COUNCIL

Changes in Regulations

The Planning and Resource Allocation Committee of Council has made the following changes in regulations, to come into effect on 8 February.

Readership in Modern South Asian History

In Sect. III of Council Regulations 24 of 2002, concerning individual readerships (Statutes, 2000, p. 438, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), delete existing § 131.1 and substitute:

'1. There shall be a Reader in Modern South East Asian History who shall be elected from time to time by a board consisting of:

(1) the Vice-Chancellor, or, if the head of the college specified (2) of this clause is Vice- Chancellor, a person appointed by Council on the occurrence of a vacancy to act as an elector on that occasion;

(2) the head of the college to which the readership shall be for the time being allocated by Council under any regulation on that behalf, or if the head is unable or unwilling to act, a person appointed by the governing body of the college on the occurrence of a vacancy to act as an elector on that occasion;

(3) a person appointed by the governing body of the college specified in (2) of this regulation;

(4), (5) two persons appointed by Council;

(6) a person appointed by the Humanities Board;

(7) a person appointed by the Board of the Faculty of Oriental Studies;

(8), (9) two persons appointed by the Board of the Faculty of History.'

[These changes, made on the recommendation of the Humanities Division, bring the composition of the electoral board into line with current practice and governance structures. They increase the membership from seven to nine through the addition of two college appointees, the replacement of a member elected by the General Board with a member appointed by the Humanities Board, an increase from one to two members appointed by Council, and a reduction from three to two members appointed by the Board of the Faculty of History.]
