Scholarships and Prizes 2007: Music

James Ingham Halstead Scholarships

Applications are invited from graduates of any university proceeding to an advanced degree in music of the University of Oxford, i.e. the M.Litt, M.Phil, or D.Phil, or those who are intending to supplicate for the B.Mus or D.Mus, to compete for a James Ingham Halstead Scholarship in Music.

Applications must be submitted by 1 March each year and applicants are required to submit the following: a cover letter explaining personal need and progress of current studies; a piece of recent written scholarly work, maximum 5,000 words, which may be an undergraduate dissertation (for new applicants to Oxford), a long portfolio essay or composition, a draft chapter for the M.St thesis, or a transfer or confirmation essay (If applicants submit pieces of research whose purpose and relationship to their main plan of research is not immediately clear, a short introduction should be included, if necessary, to set the work in the context of their larger aims.); a reference from the supervisor (or main supervisor); a confirmation from the Director of Graduate Studies that the student is in good standing (or, for new applicants to Oxford, that the applicant has been offered a place).

Halstead Scholarships may be renewed for one or two further years subject to the same conditions being met as in the previous year. Applicants for renewal are required to submit an application letter including an explanation of need with two supporting references (at least one of which should be from a non-supervisor).

Applications should be sent to the Faculty Administrator and Board Secretary, Faculty of Music, St Aldate's, Oxford OX1 1DB. Each year the Halstead judges decide the level of award for the successful applicants and the successful renewal applicants. (Such awards are normally of the value of £300 per Halstead Scholar.) In addition, Halstead Scholars may apply for supplementary awards, depending on their financial circumstances and the state of the fund. Applications for a supplementary award also require a further application letter including an explanation of need, with two supporting references (at least one of which should be from a non-supervisor).
