Picturing India: Prints, Maps and Photographs, 1690–1920

Fri., 22 Sept. to Sat., 7 Oct. This September, Sanders presents a veritable 'wonder house' of images of India, dating from the 1600s to just after the Great War. From 17th-century maps to Orientalist topographical views, from studio portraits of Viceroys and Maharajahs, to informal studies of street vendors, plantation workers and sadhus, the exhibition offers a wide historical survey of the British pictorial reaction to the subcontinent, from the rise of the East India Company to the height of the Raj. Featured artists and photographers include Daniell and Shepherd & Bourne. University and Bodleian members are welcome to join us for a glass of wine at the exhibition opening on Thurs., 21 Sept. from 5.30–8.30 p.m. Sanders of Oxford, Rare Prints & Maps, 104 High Street, Oxford. Opening hours: Mon.,–Sat., 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Tel.: 01865 242590. Email: SOXINFO@btclick.com. Website: www.sandersofoxford.com.
