Oxford University Newcomers' Club
The Club welcomes the wives, husbands and partners of visiting scholars, graduates and members of the University who are new to Oxford. It aims to offer help, advice and information, and the opportunity to meet others socially. Informal coffee mornings are held at 13 Norham Gardens every Wednesday 10.30 a.m.–12 noon except for two weeks at Christmas and Easter. Newcomers with children (0–4 years) meet every Friday in term 10.15 a.m.–12 noon. Other term-time activities include a Book Group, informal Conversation Group and tours to colleges, museums, and other places of interest, also country walks, garden trips and a visit to an antique centre. Picturing India: Prints, Maps and Photographs, 1690–1920
Fri., 22 Sept. to Sat., 7 Oct. This September, Sanders presents a veritable 'wonder house' of images of India, dating from the 1600s to just after the Great War. From 17th-century maps to Orientalist topographical views, from studio portraits of Viceroys and Maharajahs, to informal studies of street vendors, plantation workers and sadhus, the exhibition offers a wide historical survey of the British pictorial reaction to the subcontinent, from the rise of the East India Company to the height of the Raj. Featured artists and photographers include Daniell and Shepherd & Bourne.
