Changes in Regulations

The General Purposes Committee of Council has made the following change in regulations, to come into effect on 29 June.

Medtronic Biomedical Engineering Scholarship Fund

In Part 2 of Council Regulations 25 of 2002, concerning trusts (Statutes, 2000, p. 683, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), insert new § 233 as follows, and renumber existing §§ 233–75 (pp. 683–710) as §§ 234–76:

'§ 233. The Medtronic Biomedical Engineering Scholarship Fund

1. The benefaction from the Medtronic Foundation which comprises $150,000, together with any further donations for this purpose, shall be known as the Medtronic Biomedical Engineering Scholarship Fund.

2. The University shall apply the capital and income from the Fund to support scholarships for students on the M.Sc degree course in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oxford. These scholarships will be available to UK/EU students who are female and/or from ethnic minorities.

3. The administration of the Fund, and the application of its capital and income, shall be the responsibility of a Board of Management comprising:

(1) Director, Institute of Biomedical Engineering;

(2) Director of Graduate Studies, Department of Engineering Science;

(3) Senior Administrator, Department of Engineering Science.

4. Regulation 3 above may be amended by Council.'

[This change in regulations, made on the recommendation of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Board, establishes a fund using a donation from the Medtronic Foundation, to support scholarships for UK/EU students undertaking the M.Sc in Biomedical Engineering. In order to increase the diversity of the biomedical engineering learning environment by attracting a larger number of women and ethnic minorities to the study of biomedical engineering, these scholarships will be available to UK/EU students who are female and/or from ethnic minorities. Section 34 of the Race Relations Act 1976 and section 43 of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 apply.]
