Oxford University Newcomers' Club

The Club welcomes the wives, husbands and partners of visiting scholars, graduates and members of the University who are new to Oxford. It aims to offer help, advice and information, and the opportunity to meet others socially. Informal coffee mornings are held at 13 Norham Gardens every Wednesday 10.30 a.m.–12 noon except for two weeks at Christmas and Easter. Newcomers with children (0–4 years) meet every Friday in term 10.15 a.m.–12 noon. Other term-time activities include a Book Group, informal Conversation Group and tours to colleges, museums, and other places of interest, also country walks, garden trips and a visit to an antique centre. MECO Monthly Forum

Nazir Afzal, OBE, will speak and lead a discussion on 'Honour Crimes in the British Muslim Community' on Sun., 10 Dec., at 3 p.m. in the Summertown Hall, corner Banbury and Portland Roads. Dr Afzal is the Director of the Crown Prosecution Service, London West, and is a leading campaigner against honour killings in the UK. This event is free and open to the public. 2006 - A Year Of Artists' Anniversaries

Celebration: the year 2006 marked the 400th anniversary of the birth of Rembrandt, as also coincidentally those of quite a number of other printmakers. Among a selection of original prints from five centuries, this fully-illustrated new stock catalogue offers prints by or of a number of artists whose anniversaries fall in 2006. Highlights include Rembrandt's Turbaned Soldier on Horseback and The Triumph of Mordecai; Hollar's Fur Muff and Stole; Pissarro's portrait of Cézanne (died 100 years ago); Theodore Roussel's Port of Fowey in its original etched framed. Situations Vacant

Temporary vacancy. Project: 'Spacing strategy for sheep in transit.' (Project Leader: Professor Marian Dawkins). Assistance is required on the above project for an eight-week period. The work will be based at the Field Station, Wytham, and will be supervised by Dr Tracey Jones and Dr Corri Waitt. Duties will include: Extracting video clips from VHS to CD. Recording the position of sheep in the pen using 'Mouse-track' software. Data entry and maintenance of database. Start date: ideally 8–15 Jan. 2007. Working hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m. each day.
