Oxford University Library Services

The display describing proposals for a new automated book depository in the context of a longer-term estates strategy for the University Libraries, previously mounted for members of the University in the University Offices, can now be seen by all registered Bodleian readers in the foyer of the New Bodleian Library during library opening hours. The display will be on show until the meeting in Congregation on 15 November.

Queen's College

Saturday lunchtime recitals by the Eglesfield Musical Society

The Eglesfield Musical Society will give the following recitals at 1.15 p.m. on Saturdays in the chapel, Queen's College. Admission to the recitals is free, with a retiring collection.

29 Oct. : David Bednall (tenor), Christopher Sheldrake (baritone) and Richard Rowntree (piano)

5 Nov. : Deborah Steele (alto) and Elizabeth Kelly (soprano) (strings and continuo)

12 Nov. : Stephen Clark (clarinet)

Concert by the Choir of Queen's College and the Eglesfield Musical Society: Bach, before and after—cantatas and motets in the Lutheran tradition by Tunder, Kuhnau, Bach, and Brahms

This concert will take place at 8.15 p.m. on Thursday, 24 November, in the chapel, Queen's College. Admission will be by programme at the door, and will cost £8 (£6 concessions, £4 students, free to members of Queen's College).

APPOINTMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS

Taylor Professorship of the German Language and Literature

MANFRED ENGEL (STAATSEXAMEN Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen, DR.PHIL., HABIL. Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg), Professor of New German Literature, Universität des Saarlandes, Saarbrücken, has been appointed to the professorship with effect from 1 April 2006.

Professor Engel will be a fellow of Queen's College.

Professorship of Sociology

JONATHAN GERSHUNY, FBA (B.SC. Loughborough, M.SC. Strathclyde, D.PHIL. Sussex), Professor of Sociology and Director of the Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of Essex, has been appointed to the professorship with effect from 1 October 2006.

Professor Gershuny will be a fellow of St Hugh's College.

Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology

The Medical Sciences Board has assigned the Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthalmology to J.M. TIFFANY, MA (MA, PH.D. Cambridge), Fellow of St Cross College and University Lecturer in Ophthalmological Biochemistry, from 1 October 2005 until 31 December 2005.

Department of Clinical Neurology

The Medical Sciences Board has assigned the Department of Clinical Neurology to A.C. VINCENT, MA (MB, BS, M.SC. London), Fellow of Somerville College and Professor of Clinical Neuroimmunology, for a period of two years from 1 November 2005.
