CONGREGATION 13 June 2 p.m.

Members of Congregation are reminded that written notice of any intention to vote against, or any proposed amendment to the legislative proposal at item 1 below or the proposed changed in Congregation Regulations at item 2, signed in each case by at least two members of Congregation, must be given to the Registrar by noon on Monday, 5 June (see note on the conduct of business in Congregation at the end of 'University Agenda').

1 Voting on Legislative Proposal

Dissolution of the Life and Environmental Sciences Division and renaming of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division

Explanatory Note

In Hilary Term 2006 Congregation approved in principle the disbandment of the Life and Environmental Sciences Division and the transfer of its departments to other divisions. Changes to Statutes VI and VII, to amend the membership of Council and remove the Life and Environmental Sciences Division, were approved in principle on 25 April, but at that stage the new name for the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division had yet to be agreed. This legislative proposal gives formal effect to the changes already agreed in principle. Changes to the Schedule to the Statutes, also approved on 25 April, and to other regulations, published on 23 March 2006 and 4 May 2006 (Gazette, pp. 836–7, 988–90), will be treated as consequential changes and individual references to the renamed division amended automatically.

The following Legislative Proposal submitted by Council under Part 2 of Congregation Regulations 2 of 2002 (Supplement (1) to Gazette No. 4633, 9 October 2002, Vol. 133, p. 161, as amended on 12 October 2004, Gazette, Vol. 135, p. 214) makes changes to Statute VI, subject to the approval of Her Majesty in Council, to remove the Head of the Life and Environmental Sciences Division from the membership of Council, and to replace the three members of Congregation elected by Congregation from amongst the faculties in the Divisions of Life and Environmental Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and Medical Sciences, with four members of Congregation elected from the members of the faculties in the Medical Sciences and in the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Divisions. This parallels the arrangements for the Humanities and Social Sciences Divisions.

Changes to Statute VII are also proposed to remove the Life and Environmental Sciences Division and rename the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division as the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division.

WHEREAS it is expedient to make amendments to the Statutes of the University in order to amend the membership of Council, remove the Life and Environmental Sciences Division and rename the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division accordingly, NOW THE UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD, in exercise of the powers in that behalf conferred upon it by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge Act, 1923, and of all other powers enabling it, ENACTS, clause 1 being subject to the approval of Her Majesty in Council, AS FOLLOWS.

1 In section 4 of Statute VI (Supplement (1) to the Gazette No. 4633, 9 October 2002, amended with effect from 8 May 2003, Gazette Vol. 133, p.1335, 29 May 2003), concerning the membership of Council, delete existing (11)–(18) and substitute:

'(11)–(14) the Heads of the Divisions of Humanities; Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences; Medical Sciences; and Social Sciences;

(15)–(18) four members of Congregation elected by Congregation from members of the faculties in the Divisions of Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences and of Medical Sciences;'

2 In Statute VII (Supplement (1) to the Gazette No. 4633, 9 October 2002, amended with effect from 1 October 2005 and 11 October 2005,Gazette Vol. 136, p. 246, 27 October 2005, p.184, 13 October 2005) delete existing sections 1 and 2 and substitute:

'1. The academic activities of the University shall be grouped in the following four divisions:

(1) Humanities;

(2) Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences;

(3) Medical Sciences;

(4) Social Sciences.'
