GENERAL NOTICES

Language Centre: Vacation courses in French and Mandarin Chinese

French for Reading

This is a two-week course in French for reading (level required: Lower Intermediate). Each day will consist of two hours' teaching, and the classes will take place on four days each week.

Tutor: Claire Goillandeau

Dates: 11–21 July

Hours: 10 a.m.–12 noon, Tuesday–Friday

Fee: £100 per course including materials (this fee also includes the use of the Language Library and Study Area for the vacation)


Mandarin Chinese

This is a two-week course in Mandarin Chinese for beginners. Each day will consist of two hours' teaching, and the classes will take place on four days each week.

Tutor: Claire Goillandeau

Hours: 1–3 p.m., Tuesday–Friday

Fee: £100 per course including materials (this fee also includes the use of the Language Library and Study Area for the vacation)


Vacation Courses in English for Academic Studies

English for Academic Visitors

In July, the Language Centre is offering a three-week course for Academic Visitors. The general aim of the course is to improve participants' language skills so that they are able to make the most of their time in Oxford and to maximise the contribution that they are able to make in their field of expertise.

The course will help participants develop their English oral skills in academic and social situations and will focus on conversational skills, expressing ideas and opinions clearly, accurately and fluently, understanding spoken English and giving spoken presentations, as well as revising basic grammatical structures and improving pronunciation.

Dates: 3–20 July

Hours: 9.30 a.m.–1 p.m., Monday–Thursday

Fee: £195


Pre-sessional courses in English

These courses are designed to prepare international students and academic visitors for study at the University of Oxford or any other institution of higher education where English is spoken.

Dates: 24 July–15 September

Hours: Monday–Friday, for four or eight weeks (no classes Wednesdays, except Bank Holiday week)

Fee: £1,750 for eight weeks or £895 for four weeks

Library and Independent Study Facilities during the vacation

The Library's collection of audio/video cassettes, books and computer programs covers over 135 languages. The independent-study area has rooms equipped with listening and viewing facilities, including DVD and VHS video players plus live satellite broadcasting, for individual work and computer based learning resources. New users should aim to arrive shortly before 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. to register and attend an orientation session. The library is open from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. in Week 9 (week beginning 19 June) and from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. during the Long Vacation.

Ashmolean Museum: Keeper of Heberden Coin Room
