Oxford University Gazette, 13 July 2006: Appointments

Bampton Lecturership 2009

Applications are invited for the position of Bampton Lecturer for 2009.

The Bampton Lectures are to be delivered 'upon either of the following subjects: to confirm and establish the Christian Faith, and to confute all heretics and schismatics—upon the divine authority of the Holy Scriptures—upon the authority of the writings of the Primitive Fathers, as to the Faith and Practice of the Primitive Church—upon the Divinity of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ—upon the Divinity of the Holy Ghost—upon the Articles of the Christian Faith, as comprehended in the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds'.

Eight lectures are to be delivered in 2009 at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, in either or both of Full Hilary and Trinity Terms as the Vice-Chancellor may appoint. It is a condition of the lecturership that the lectures be printed within twelve months of their delivery, unless an extension of time is granted by the electors in view of special circumstances. One copy of the printed lectures will be given to the Chancellor of the University, one to the head of every college, one to the Lord Mayor of the City of Oxford, and one to the Bodleian Library.

The stipend of the lecturer, not payable until the required copies have been printed, will be not less than £5,000 plus travelling and subsistence expenses. The lecturer must be a university graduate. Previous Bampton Lecturers are ineligible to apply.

Candidates are requested to send to Mrs E.A. Macallister, Humanities Division, 34 St Giles', Oxford OX1 3LH, to arrive not later than 8 December 2006, two typed copies of their application, which should include lists of their published works and other relevant information about themselves, together with a statement of their subject and a syllabus of the lectures they propose to give.
