Oxford University Newcomers' Club

The Club welcomes the wives, husbands and partners of visiting scholars, graduates and members of the University who are new to Oxford. It aims to offer help, advice and information, and the opportunity to meet others socially. Informal coffee mornings are held at 13 Norham Gardens every Wednesday 10.30 a.m.–12 noon except for two weeks at Christmas and Easter. Newcomers with children (0–4 years) meet every Friday in term 10.15 a.m.–12 noon. Other term-time activities include a Book Group, informal Conversation Group and tours to colleges, museums, and other places of interest, also country walks, garden trips and a visit to an antique centre. By the Cam and the Isis: 1954-2000

In this book Francis Warner looks back over the last half century in his two universities with gratitude. It takes the form of two poems, each describing a walk and the friends he meets and visits, or remembers: around Cambridge one night in winter, around Oxford one summer afternoon. Elizabeth Harvey-Lee's new summer-stock catalogue is available. 'Inside view: interiors and still lives' is an interesting miscellany of artists' original printmaking from five centuries. Oxford Muslim Music Festival

MECO hosts the second annual Oxford Muslim Music Festival, which takes place on Sat., 10 June, 4 p.m.–11 p.m., at the Oxford Town Hall. Muslim artists and musicians from around the Islamic world (Algeria, Gambia, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Syria, Turkey, United Kingdom and Yemen) will perform distinctive religious tunes, sacred music, liturgical songs and devotional chants. Lindemann Trust Fellowship Awards to the United States 2007

Pure and Applied Physical Sciences. Applications are invited from graduates to carry out research at institutions in the USA. Fields of research will include Astronomy, Biophysics, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Mathematics and Physics. Candidacy is open to UK and Commonwealth citizens who graduated from a UK University before 1 Sept. 2004. Candidacy is also open to UK and Commonwealth citizens who are pursuing postgraduate research at a UK University, although not graduates of these institutions. Age limit: under 35 on 1 Sept. 2007.
