Scholarships and Prizes 2005:
C.E. STEVENS AND CHARLES OLDHAM SCHOLARSHIPS IN CLASSICAL STUDIES 2006
The Board of the Faculty of Classics gives notice that, provided suitable candidates present themselves, it will in Trinity Term 2006 make elections to a C.E. Stevens Scholarship and about fourteen Charles Oldham Scholarships for travel abroad during the calendar year 2006 in connection with Greek or Roman Studies. Retrospective awards may be made for travel undertaken during the Easter vacation.
The value of the C.E. Stevens Scholarship will be of the order of £350, and of each Charles Oldham Scholarship of the order of £250.
Candidates must be members of the University reading for Honour Moderations in Classics, or for the Honour Schools of Literae Humaniores or Classics and Modern Languages or Ancient and Modern History or Classical Archaeology and Ancient History. Preference will normally be given to candidates who have completed their first but not yet entered the final year of their undergraduate course. Application forms are available from the Classics Faculty Board Secretary, Classics Centre, Old Boys' School, George Street, Oxford OX1 2RL. A completed form for each candidate should be returned to the Classics Faculty Board Secretary, Classics Centre, Old Boys' School, George Street, Oxford OX1 2RL, not later than Friday, 17 February 2006, setting out:
(i) the object of the travel to be undertaken with dates, itinerary, and estimate of cost; if the applicant is hoping to be accepted for a course at the British School at Athens or the British School at Rome, he or she should present also an alternative travel programme, with dates, itinerary, and cost, to be undertaken in the event of a place not being offered;
(ii) whether the applicant has already visited the area;
(iii) a brief note on his or her previous career, present standing, and particular interest in classical studies;
(iv) the applicant's financial circumstances including the amount of any maintenance grant, or of any travel grant from another source;
(v) the name of one referee from his or her college, who should also be asked to write a letter of reference directly to the Classics Faculty Board Secretary, Classics Centre, Old Boys' School, George Street, Oxford OX1 2RL, by Friday, 3 March 2006.
No person may be elected twice to a scholarship.
