Oxford University Gazette, 27 January 2005: Appointments

BALLIOL COLLEGE

Five-year Stipendiary Lecturership in Mathematics

Balliol College invites applications for a Stipendiary Lecturership in Mathematics, tenable for a period of five years from 1 October 2005 while Professor Frances Kirwan holds an EPSRC Senior Research Fellowship. The position is not renewable.

The college proposes to appoint the lecturer to teach for either ten or twelve hours a week during University terms. The lecturer will be expected to teach a selection of first-year and second-year (mainly pure) mathematics to Balliol undergraduates in mathematics and its joint schools, and perhaps to contribute some third-year or fourth-year classes to the Mathematical Institute's intercollegiate class scheme. The lecturer will also be expected to assist with the administration of the subject in Balliol, including admissions, and with the pastoral care of students.

The stipend payable to a twelve-hour lecturer will be on a scale which is currently £18,374-- £22,508 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. The stipend payable to a ten-hour lecturer is currently £15,312 per annum. These stipends will be uprated for 2005--6 and subsequent years by whatever amount is agreed each year.

The lecturer will have senior common room rights, including an entitlement to free meals in term and most of the vacation, and the use of a teaching room in college.

Applications, containing a curriculum vitae, a statement of research and teaching experience, and the names of three referees, should be sent to the Senior Tutor, Balliol College, Oxford OX1 3BJ by Saturday, 19 February. Candidates should ask their referees to write directly to the Senior Tutor by that date; it would be helpful if at least one referee could comment on the candidate's teaching experience and abilities. It is expected that interviews will be held during the week beginning 7 March.

Further particulars are available from the Senior Tutor's Secretary, Ms Glynis Baleham (e- mail: glynis.baleham@balliol.ox.ac.uk). Prospective applicants can also contact Keith Hannabuss (e-mail: (keith.hannabuss@balliol.ox.ac.uk) or Frances Kirwan (e-mail: frances.kirwan@balliol.ox.ac.uk) for more details.

Balliol College is an equal opportunities employer.
