MERTON COLLEGE
Greendale ScholarshipMerton College is offering one Greendale Scholarship in 2005. The scholarship is intended to assist a Swiss national or resident of outstanding academic excellence to study at the University. It covers college and university fees, and a maintenance grant equivalent to that of a UK national research funding body's doctoral maintenance award (c.£10,000 in 2004-- 5), net of accommodation charges where applicable. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarship will be tenable for up to four years.The competition is open to applicants who meet all of the following conditions: have completed their first degree at a Swiss university between 1 May 2002 and 1 October 2005; are Swiss nationals or residents, i.e. hold a category `B' or a category `C' residence permit issued by the Government of Switzerland; have undertaken not more than two years of postgraduate study or research; are intending to start a course of study leading to a degree or formal qualification from the University of Oxford starting in October 2005 in any of the subjects normally acceptable for graduate study at the college, apart from Medicine and the MBA; and have no other funding which would allow them to do so. The closing date for this competition is 22 April 2005. Applicants should already have been offered places by the relevant faculty or department of the University or should be in the competition for the third cycle of Oxford graduate admissions. Applicants who have not been accepted by the relevant faculty or department of the University by 17 May 2005 will be rejected. Leventis Graduate Scholarship in Greek StudiesMerton College proposes to elect in 2005 a Leventis Graduate Scholar. The scholarship will cover College and University fees, and an additional maintenance grant equivalent to that of the AHRB (in the region of £10,500 for 2004--5), payable in three termly instalments, net of accommodation, if applicable. Single accommodation, if required, is guaranteed for the first year of the scholarship and may be available in subsequent years. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarship will be tenable for three years.The award is open to both men and women who meet the following criteria: all candidates must be university graduates, who are citizens of the Republic of Greece or the Republic of Cyprus, and have not done more than two years of postgraduate study or research, and propose to begin a doctorate at the University of Oxford in October 2005 in the study of any aspect of Greek culture and civilisation from the Bronze Age to AD 1453. While the Committee will interpret this in a wide sense (especially geographically) candidates who are in any doubt whether their proposal meets the criteria should contact the Secretary for Graduates, Merton College. This award is not available for studies relating to Modern Greece, or at any other university. Reed Foundation Graduate ScholarshipMerton College is offering one Reed Foundation Graduate Scholarship in 2005. The scholarship is intended to assist a student of outstanding academic excellence from the developing world who is applying to the University of Oxford for the first time, and who for financial reasons would not otherwise be able to come.It covers college and university fees, and a maintenance grant equivalent to that of a UK national research funding body's doctoral maintenance award (c.£10,000 in 2004--5), net of accommodation charges where applicable. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarship will be tenable for one or two years. The competition is open to applicants who meet all of the following conditions: have graduated after 1 May 2002 with a degree result equivalent to at least Upper Second Class Honours in a British first degree; and are nationals of one of the following countries: Algeria, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Syrian Arab Republic, Tunisia, West Bank and Gaza, Republic of Yemen; and have undertaken not more than two years of postgraduate study or research; and are intending to start a course of study leading to a degree or formal qualification from the University of Oxford starting in October 2005, in any of the subjects normally accepted by the college, apart from Medicine and the MBA, and have no other funding which would allow them to do so. The scholarship is intended to assist a Japanese student of outstanding academic excellence who for financial reasons would not otherwise be able to study at the University. It covers college and university fees, and a maintenance grant equivalent to that of a UK national research funding body's doctoral maintenance award (c.£10,000 in 2004--5), net of accommodation charges where applicable. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarship will be tenable for up to three years.The competition is open to Japanese nationals who meet all of the following conditions: are graduates of any university, other than Oxford; are not ordinarily resident in the UK; have undertaken not more than two years of postgraduate study or research; propose to begin a programme of study leading to a Master's degree or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford in October 2005 in any of the subjects normally acceptable for graduate study at the college, apart from Medicine and the MBA; and have no other funding which would allow them to do so. The closing date for this competition is 22 April 2005.
