Oxford University Gazette, 20 January 2005: Appointments
WOLFSON COLLEGE
Non-stipendiary Junior Research Fellowships in Humanities and Social Studies 2005Wolfson College proposes to elect up to six non-stipendiary Junior Research Fellows in Humanities and Social Studies, if candidates of sufficient merit present themselves, without limitation of subject, for two years in the first instance from 1 October 2005. These fellowships carry common table rights (up to £30 a week for meals in Hall) and are open to both men and women. Preference will be given to candidates who have not already held a junior research fellowship at another college. The fellowship is renewable for a further term of two years subject to certain conditions which include satisfactory progress in research, normally submission of a doctoral (or equivalent) thesis by those not holding a doctorate at the time of election and adequate funding for the further term.Candidates should have had at least three years' relevant postgraduate experience by commencement of the fellowship, and in the case of postdoctoral applicants, no more than three years should have elapsed since receipt of a doctorate. Exceptions to this provision will only be made for candidates whose postdoctoral academic career has been interrupted by, for example, childbirth, family commitments, illness or compulsory military service. A statement giving reasons why an exception should be considered in their case must be included with the application. Applications, typed or clearly printed, including a completed application form (see below), a curriculum vitae, and the names of three referees, should be sent to the President's Secretary, Wolfson College, Oxford OX2 6UD, by 21 March. Candidates should also include samples of their written work, details of the work they will be doing in Oxford and their means of support. Candidates should themselves write directly to their referees asking them without further request to send a confidential reference to the President's Secretary by the closing date of Monday, 21 March. References may be faxed direct to the President's Secretary on Oxford (2)74136. Junior Research Fellows are not ipso facto members of the governing body of the college; but they are eligible to sit on nearly all college committees, and may be elected as representative members of the governing body. For an application form please send a self-addressed envelope to the President's Secretary, Wolfson College, Oxford OX2 6UD. For all UK addresses outside the Oxford University Messenger area, please affix appropriate postage stamps. TimetableClosing date: Monday, 21 March. Typed or clearly printed applications should reach the President's Secretary by the closing date. The college reserves the right not to accept applications received after the closing date. Candidates notified: Monday, 25 April--Friday, 29 April. Short-listed candidates will be notified during this week, probably by telephone or e-mail. Interview date: Wednesday, 4 May (morning). Short-listed candidates must be available to attend for interview on this date (an alternative will not be possible). It should be noted that the college is only able to offer financial assistance towards travelling expenses when the endowment associated with the fellowship allows it to do so and, unfortunately, in the current financial climate this is not possible. Enquiries should be addressed to the President's Secretary, Wolfson College, Oxford OX2 6UD (telephone: Oxford (2)74102, fax: (2)74136, e-mail: sue.hales@wolfson.ox.ac.uk).
Wolfson/AEA Technology Industrial Fellowships 2005--7Wolfson College proposes to make elections (if suitable candidates are proposed) to two two-year Wolfson/AEA Industrial Fellowships for the academic years 2005--7. These fellowships are intended to enable those working at AEA Technology or in industry to come to Oxford to engage in a joint research project with a university department, with whom the candidate must have made satisfactory arrangements. Preference for one fellowship will be given to a suitably qualified candidate nominated by AEA Technology. The intention is that the fellowships should give an opportunity for collaborative research which would not otherwise have taken place, but the college is prepared to receive proposals in respect of already established research projects. Proposers will be expected to negotiate an agreement with the company by whom the candidate is employed, under which the company would continue to pay his or her full salary but would permit him or her to spend one-fifth of his/her time on a joint research project in Oxford. The college is willing to consider a variation from this pattern to suit current conditions or individual circumstances. Wolfson College will offer up to £1,000 per annum towards any expense reasonably incurred in pursuance of the aims of the fellowship. Applications should include a completed application form, a curriculum vitae of the candidate, and the names of two referees, and should be sent to the President's Secretary at the address below (marked on the envelope `WAIF') by the closing date of Monday, 21 March. Application forms are available from the President's Secretary, Wolfson College, Oxford OX2 6UD. Candidates should themselves write directly to their referees asking them without further request to send a confidential reference to the President's Secretary by the closing date (marked `WAIF' on the envelope).
