1 Voting on Resolution concerning Oxford's Academic Strategy

In order to ensure the paramount principle of academic freedom, Congregation rejects any 'mandatory system of regular, joint University–College review of individual contributions, with scope to enhance financial rewards, re-balance academic duties, and address under-performance' as expressed in Oxford's Academic Strategy, a Green Paper, Strategy IV(c).

¶ The following amendment, proposed on behalf of Council, will be taken into consideration:

Delete all after 'Congregation' and substitute

'agrees that any proposal to introduce a "mandatory system of regular, joint University–college review of individual contributions, with scope to enhance financial rewards.. . ", as suggested in the Oxford Academic Strategy, a Green Paper (Strategy IV (c)), should not only be measured against this principle, but should be considered through careful continuing consultation via the usual channels, and that any such proposal be subject to an eventual vote by Congregation.'

2 Voting on Resolution concerning the reorganisation of Oxford University libraries

¶ Council has agreed that it is willing to be bound by this resolution, and unless, by noon on Monday, 9 May, notice of opposition or of a proposed amendment is received from two members of Congregation, the resolution will be declared carried without question put under the provisions of Regulation 3.20(3) of Congregation Regulations 2 of 2002 (made by Congregation on 5 March 2002 and amended on 12 October 2004).


3 Voting on Resolution concerning Oxford's Governance Strategy

In view of the importance and complexity of the issues raised by the Green Paper Oxford's Governance Strategy, Congregation resolves to postpone the discussion of the Green Paper and revisions to it, scheduled for the meeting of Congregation on 28 June, until the meeting of Congregation on 1 November.

Voting on Legislative Proposal

Faculty of Modern History

Explanatory note

The following Legislative Proposal submitted by Council under Part 2 of Congregation Regulations 2 of 2002 (Supplement (1) to Gazette No. 4633, 9 October 2002, p. 161, as amended on 12 October 2004, Gazette Vol. 135, p. 214), which is promoted on the recommendation of the Humanities Board, makes changes to the existing legislation governing the Beit Professorship of the History of British Commonwealth, the Ford's Lectures in British History, the Gibbs Prizes, the Heath Harrison Fund and the Slade Professorship of Fine Art. These changes are to reflect the change of name of the Faculty of Modern History to the Faculty of History.

WHEREAS it is expedient to change the name of the Faculty of Modern History to the Faculty of History, the University enacts as follows.

1 In section 5.3. (7)–(9) of Part 5 to the Schedule to the Statutes, concerning the Beit Professor of the History of British Commonwealth, delete 'Modern'.

2 In sections 19.3. (5)–(7) and 19.8. (2) of Part 19 to the Schedule to the Statutes, concerning the Ford's Lectures in British History, delete 'Modern'.

3 In sections 23.2. (1) and 23.4. (7) of Part 23 to the Schedule to the Statutes, concerning the Gibbs Prizes, delete 'Modern'.

4 In section 27.5. (5), of Part 27 to the Schedule to the Statutes, concerning the Heath Harrison Fund, delete 'Modern'.

5 In sections 54.4. (6) and (7) of Part 54 to the Schedule to the Statutes, concerning the Slade Professor of Fine Art, delete 'Modern'.

6. This statute shall be effective from 1 October 2005.
