STATUTES APPROVED BY HER MAJESTY IN COUNCIL

Mr Vice-Chancellor has received a communication from the Clerk of Her Majesty's Privy Council, stating that on 13 November 2003 Her Majesty was pleased to approve the Statutes (i) extending the subject area and increasing the number of the J.P. Morgan Prizes, printed in Gazette, Vol. 133, p. 473 (approved by Congregation, p. 515); (ii) amending the arrangements for management of the Griffith Institute, printed in Gazette, Vol. 133, p. 905 (approved by Congregation, p. 948); and (iii) revising the arrangements for the governance of the Botanic Garden, printed in Gazette, Vol. 133, p. 985 (approved by Congregation, p. 1012).

UNIVERSITY GAZETTE

Publication arrangements

The remaining Gazettes of this term will be published on 4, 11, and 18 December. Publication for Hilary Term will begin on 15 January. The usual deadlines will apply: 12 noon on Wednesday of the week prior to publication for classified advertisements; 12 noon on Thursday of the week prior to publication for all official notices.

LANGUAGE CENTRE

French, Italian, and Spanish: `catch-up'---`brush-up' courses in Week 9 (8--12 December)

The Language Centre is offering a series of sixteen-hour intensive courses in French, Italian, and Spanish in Week 9 for those still on waiting lists and for those who wish to refresh their language skills. Details of times and levels are now available. For application details please consult the Language Centre Web site: www.lang.ox.ac.uk or the Information Officer.

French Beginners: Tuesday--Friday, 9 a.m.--1 p.m.

French Lower Intermediate: Monday--Friday, 2--5.15 p.m.

Italian Beginners: Monday--Friday, 9 a.m.--12.15 p.m.

Spanish Beginners: Monday--Friday, 9 a.m.--12.15 p.m.

Spanish Lower Intermediate: Monday--Friday, 2--5.15 p.m.

Course fee: £35 students, £45 staff, £75 non-members of the University.

Note: for most courses participants will be expected to purchase the textbook currently in use.

APPOINTMENT

APPOINTMENT OF ACTING HEAD OF THE RESEARCH LABORATORY FOR ARCHAEOLOGY AND THE HISTORY OF ART

The Life and Environmental Sciences Board has appointed professor robert e.m. hedges, ma, d.phil., Fellow of St Cross College and University Lecturer in Archaeological Science, as Acting Head of the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art for Hilary Term 2004 vice Professor M.S. Tite, MA, D.Phil., Professor of Archaeological Science and Fellow of Linacre College.
