Oxford University Gazette, 17 June 2004: Appointments

MERTON COLLEGE

Stipendiary Lecturership in Philosophy

Merton College proposes to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Philosophy for one year from 1 October 2004, to teach up to six hours per week. The lecturer will be paid at a point on the stipendiary lecturers' scale (currently £9,447--£10,925 per annum), with entitlement to join USS and membership of common room with the right to take lunch and dinner free of charge.

The successful candidate, who should have completed (or be about to complete) his/her doctoral studies, will be able to teach a number of the following subjects: for the first-year students, Moral Philosophy (in conjunction with Mill's Utilitarianism), General Philosophy (metaphysics and epistemology), and Plato's Meno and Euthyphro; and for second- and third-year students, Ethics, Knowledge and Reality, Plato's Republic, Aristotle's Ethics, and the Philosophy of Religion. In addition to his/her teaching duties, the successful candidate will be expected to help with the organisation of subjects involving Philosophy within college, to lend pastoral support to students reading for these degrees, and to assist with admissions.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, including a statement of teaching range, to the Tutorial Secretary, Merton College, Oxford OX1 4JD (telephone: Oxford (2)76329, fax: (2)86500, e-mail: clare.bass@admin.merton.ox.ac.uk), by 1 July, and should ask two referees to write directly to the Tutorial Secretary by this date. Interviews are likely to be held in college on 19 July.

Leventis Graduate Scholarship in Greek Studies

Merton College proposes to elect in 2005 a Leventis Graduate Scholar. The scholarship will cover college and university fees, and an additional maintenance grant equivalent to that of the AHRB (in the region of £10,500 for 2004--5), payable in three termly instalments, net of accommodation, if applicable. Single accommodation, if required, is guaranteed for the first year of the scholarship and may be available in subsequent years. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarship will be tenable for three years.

The award is open to both men and women who meet the following criteria: all candidates must be university graduates, who are citizens of the Republic of Greece or the Republic of Cyprus, and have not done more than two years of postgraduate study or research, and propose to begin a doctorate at the University of Oxford in October 2005 in the study of any aspect of Greek culture and civilisation from the Bronze Age to AD 1453. While the committee will interpret this in a wide sense (especially geographically) candidates who are in any doubt whether their proposal meets the criteria should contact the Secretary for Graduates, Merton College. This award is not available for studies relating to Modern Greece, or at any other university.

Details of the award may be obtained from the Secretary for Graduates, Merton College, Oxford OX1 4JD (fax: Oxford (2)86500, e-mail: julieg@admin.merton.ox.ac.uk).

The closing date for applications is 31 January 2005.

These scholarships are intended to assist students of outstanding academic excellence who for financial reasons would not otherwise be able to study at the University of Oxford. The scholarships comprise payment of all college and university fees and an additional maintenance grant equivalent to that of the AHRB (in the region of £10,500 for 2004--5), payable in three termly instalments, net of accommodation, if applicable. Single accommodation, if required, is guaranteed for the first year of the scholarship and may be available in the subsequent years. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships will be tenable for three years.

The college intends to award one or two scholarships.

Barnett Bequest

The Barnett Bequest is offered by the college to a UK candidate of outstanding academic excellence who wishes to read for the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at the University of Oxford from October 2004.

Applications are invited from those who have already been accepted by the Faculty of Law to commence the BCL in October 2004 and who have secured the offer of a place at Merton or another Oxford college, or those who have applied to commence the BCL in October 2004 and who are still awaiting consideration of acceptance by the Faculty of Law. This award is tenable only at Merton College; those already accepted by another Oxford college will be allowed to transfer in order to take up the award. Selection will be made on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.

The competition is open to graduates of any university with a first-class honours degree, who are ordinarily resident in the UK and have been accepted to begin the BCL in October 2004.

The college reserves the right not to award the Barnett Bequest in any given year should no suitable candidate present themselves.
