CONSULTATIVE NOTICE

COMMITTEE ON STATUTES BEFORE THE PRIVY COUNCIL

Notice of proposed consent to the amendments to the Statutes of Harris Manchester College

The Committee on Statutes before the Privy Council, acting under authority delegated to it by Council, is minded to give consent on behalf of the University to the amendment to Statute I of Harris Manchester College as approved by the Governing Body on 11 February 2004, in so far as such consent is required by Section 7 (2) of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge Act, 1923. This consent will be effective eleven days after publication of this notice unless written notice of a resolution, signed by at least twenty members of Congregation, calling upon Council to withhold that consent, has been given to the Registrar by noon on Monday, 26 July.

The effect of the amendment is to provide for the election of not more than three supernumerary fellows to the Governing Body.

APPOINTMENTS

PROFESSORSHIP OF DEVELOPMENT ECONOMICS

STEFAN DERCON, MA, M.PHIL., D.PHIL. (B.PHIL. Leuven), Fellow of Jesus College and University Lecturer (CUF) in Economics, has been appointed to the professorship with effect from 1 October 2004.

Dr Dercon will be a fellow of Wolfson College.

PROFESSORSHIP OF GEOCHEMISTRY

ALEXANDER NORMAN HALLIDAY (B.SC., PH.D. Newcastle), Professor and Head of Department of Earth Sciences, and Associate Member, Department of Materials, ETH Zürich, has been appointed to the professorship with effect from 1 October 2004.

Professor Halliday will be a fellow of St Hugh's College.

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY

The Social Sciences Board has appointed C. MILLS, MA (B.SC., M.SC. London), Fellow of Nuffield College and University Lecturer in Sociology, as Head of the Department of Sociology for one year from 1 October 2004.

RECONFERMENT OF THE TITLE OF VISITING PROFESSOR

The Mathematical and Physical Sciences Board has reconferred the title of Visiting Professor in Physics on PROFESSOR JOHN V. WOOD, Chief Executive, CCLRC, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, for a period of five years from 1 October 2004.
