Commemoration Day Sermon

THE MOST REVD DR ROWAN WILLIAMS, Archbishop of Canterbury, Honorary Fellow of Wadham College, will deliver the Commemoration Day Sermon on Sunday, 20 June, in the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. The service will commence at 10 a.m.

Language Centre

Essentials of Academic Writing (EAS), 21--4 June

The Language Centre is offering an intensive academic writing course in English for Academic Studies in ninth week of Trinity Term. This fifteen-hour course is specially designed for those who have time to take only one academic writing course. The course is suitable for academic visitors or others who may be in Oxford for a limited period only, as well as for those with very heavy schedules.

The programme combines the most essential elements of the material covered in the Michaelmas and Trinity Term courses. Topics dealt with include: text connection, information order, the use of articles, tenses, modal verbs, hedging, personal and impersonal forms. Hours: Monday–Wednesday, 9.30--11.45 a.m. and 1--3.15 (Thursday 9.30 a.m.--12.45 p.m.). Fee: £95.


English for Academic Visitors (EAS), 5--22 July

In July, the Language Centre is offering a three-week course for Academic Visitors. The general aim of the course is to improve participants' language skills so that they are able to make the most of their time in Oxford and to maximise the contribution that they are able to make in their field of expertise.

The course will help participants develop their English oral skills in academic and social situations and will focus on conversational skills, expressing ideas and opinions clearly, accurately and fluently, understanding spoken English and giving spoken presentations, as well as revising basic grammatical structures and improving pronunciation. Hours: Monday–Thursday, 9.15 a.m.--12.45 p.m. Fee: £195.

Circulation of the Gazette to retired Senior Members of the University

It has been decided that any former member of Congregation over the age of seventy-five who is resident in Oxford may continue to receive the Gazette, if he or she so wishes, on application in writing to the Information Office, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford OX1 2JD. Such applications must be renewed at the beginning of each academic year.
