NORMAN CHESTER--ANDREW W. MELLON JOINT MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Norman Chester Fund

The income of the Norman Chester Fund is to be used for `the promotion of the study of government and politics and generally to further a science of politics within the university'. Applications are invited for awards, not normally exceeding £500, to assist in the meeting of research expenses from any member of the University reading for the M.Litt., and D.Phil. Please note that applications from M.Phil. candidates will be accepted in exceptional circumstances only for which a detailed application must be submitted that justifies a genuine need for fieldwork/research to be carried out abroad. In such cases, the decision of the Committee will be final. Applicants should also note that the Committee
(a) will be reluctant to make awards to those appearing to be at a preliminary exploratory stage in their research;
(b) will not normally support applications from those who have already applied for extension of time on the M.Litt./D.Phil. thesis.

Andrew W. Mellon Fund

Limited funds are available from the endowment for the Andrew W. Mellon Professorship for the promotion of research in American Government. Applications are invited from research students and senior members of the University. A joint application form for both funds is available for download from the Department of Politics and International Relations Web site at http://www.politics.ox.ac.uk/ teaching/dept- funding.htm. Applicants should make clear on the form for which fund they are applying and state explicitly the relevance of their project to the purpose of the particular fund to which they have applied.

Completed forms and statements should be submitted to the Academic Administrator, Department of Politics and International Relations, George Street by noon on Friday of fifth week each term. A supporting reference from applicants' supervisors should be included with the application.
