Six-hour Stipendiary Lecturership in Modern History

Balliol College proposes, if a suitable candidate applies, to appoint a six-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Modern European and World History for Hilary and Trinity Terms 2003. The lecturer will be required to teach General History IV (1815–1914) in Honour Moderations. In the Final Honour School the lecturer would be expected to contribute to the teaching of General History papers covering the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The lecturer will also be required to participate in the teaching of the Approaches to History and Historiography papers in Honour Moderations, and Comparative History and Historiography in the Final Honour School.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach an average of six hours a week over the two terms. He or she will receive a stipend of £3,931 for the two terms and certain common-room rights. Applicants should provide a letter of application supported by a curriculum vitae, and should state which parts of the syllabus they would be willing to teach. They should provide the names of two referees, whom they should ask to write directly to the Senior Tutor. Applications and references must reach the Senior Tutor, Balliol College, Oxford OX1 3BJ, by Monday, 18 November. The post may be renewed for the academic year 2003–4.

Six-hour Stipendiary Lecturership in Mathematics

Balliol College proposes, if a suitable candidate applies, to appoint a six-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Mathematics for the calendar year 2003. The lecturer will be asked to teach a selection of first- and second-year Mathematics, and to contribute some section b classes to the intercollegiate class scheme. The lecturer will also be expected to assist with the administration of the subject and with pastoral care of students.

The successful applicant will be expected to teach an average of six hours a week. He or she will receive a stipend of £5,896 per annum and certain common-room rights.

Applicants should provide a letter of application supported by a curriculum vitae, and should state which parts of the Mathematics syllabus they would be willing to teach. They should give the names of two referees, whom they should ask to write directly to the Senior Tutor.

Applications and references must reach the Senior Tutor, Balliol College, Oxford OX1 3BJ, by Wednesday, 13 November. It is expected that interviews will be held during the week beginning 18 November (sixth week). Vaughan Memorial Travelling Scholarship

Balliol College intends to award for 2003 a Vaughan Memorial Travelling Scholarship, as established by the will of the late Mrs D.J. Vaughan, if a suitable candidate appears. It is a stipulation of the bequest that candidates must be current undergraduates of limited means who have had at least part of their previous education at Eton College. Preference will be given to members of Balliol College.

The award, of up to £4,000, will be conditional on the attainment of a II.1 degree or better.

It must be used towards the cost of attending a foreign university for a postgraduate year, and following an approved course of study there which includes at least in part `a study of the social conditions of the common people'. Applications with one reference and with outline proposals for the year's study should be made to the Senior Tutor, Balliol College, Oxford OX1 3BJ, by the fourth week of Hilary Term.
