COUNCIL OF THE UNIVERSITY

Changes in Regulations

Council has made the following change in regulations, to come into effect on 14 March.

Title of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and of Honorary Clinical Lecturer

In Sect. V of Council Regulations 24 of 2002, concerning academic posts in clinical departments (Statutes, 2000, p. 527, as redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 132, p. 1461), delete § 6 and substitute:

`§ 6. Title of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and of Honorary Clinical Lecturer

1. The Medical Sciences Board may confer the title of `Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in [here state the subject]' without stipend upon any appropriately qualified individual who takes part in the instruction in clinical subjects of candidates for the Second Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Medicine or in postgraduate teaching, subject to the following conditions:

(1) the title shall be conferred for an indefinite period subject to continued substantial involvement in the instruction in clinical subjects of candidates for the Second Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Medicine or in postgraduate teaching, and satisfactory performance in routine teaching quality assessments;

(2) review of performance shall be based on an assessment of teaching quality by the relevant head of department or such other member of staff as may be authorised by the relevant head of department;

(3) a title-holder shall be deemed to be a member, or associated member as appropriate, of the corresponding university department.

2. The Medical Sciences Board may confer the title of `Honorary Clinical Lecturer in [here state the subject]' without stipend upon any person who regularly undertakes teaching in clinical subjects of candidates for the Second Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Medicine, subject to the following conditions:

(1) the title shall be conferred for an indefinite period subject to continued substantial involvement in the instruction in clinical subjects of candidates for the Second Examination for the Degree of Bachelor of Medicine;

(2) review of performance shall be based on an assessment of teaching quality by the relevant head of department or such other member of staff as may be authorised by the relevant head of department;

(3) a title-holder shall be deemed to be a member, or associated member as appropriate, of the corresponding university department.

3. Persons shall cease to hold these titles on their resignation or retirement from their substantive appointments.'

[This change alters the procedures for conferment of the title of Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and of Honorary Clinical Lecturer (currently `Acting Clinical Lecturer') so that there is no longer a requirement to undertake a formal review every five years. Instead there will be an annual review of teaching within each specialty and the title will be retained by those continuing to provide substantial teaching.]
