Notice

The meeting of Congregation is cancelled. The sole business comprises questions to which no opposition has been notified and in respect of which no request for an adjournment has been received, and Mr Vice-Chancellor will accordingly declare the resolutions carried without a meeting under the provisions of Sect. 7 (1) of Statute IV (Supplement (1) to Gazette No. 4633, 9 October 2002, p. 100).

Declaration of approval of Resolutions approving the conferment of Honorary Degrees

(1) That the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa, upon JOHN BRADEMAS, D.PHIL. (BA Harvard), Honorary Fellow of Brasenose College, President Emeritus of New York University and former Member of the Congress of the United States, be approved.

(2) That the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa, upon THE HON. ROBERT HAWKE, AC, B.LITT. (BA (Econ.), LL.B. University of Western Australia), Honorary Fellow of University College, former Prime Minster of Australia, be approved.

(3) That the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa, upon PROFESSOR THE HON. REX NETTLEFORD, OM, M.PHIL. (BA UWI), FIJ, Honorary Fellow of Oriel College, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, be approved.

(4) That the conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa, upon DAVID RANDLE WOODS, D.PHIL. (B.SC. (Hons) Rhodes University), F.A.S.S.AF., F.R.S.S.AF., University College, Vice-Chancellor of Rhodes University, South Africa, be approved.

CONGREGATION 11 March 2 p.m.

¶ Members of Congregation are reminded that written notice of any intention to vote against or to propose an amendment to the Legislative Proposal at item 1 below or the proposed change in Congregation Regulations at item 2 below, or of any intention to speak or to ask a question concerning the Annual Review of the University at item 3 below, signed in each case by at least two members of Congregation, must be given to the Registrar by noon on Monday, 3 March (see the Guide to Procedures in Congregation cited in the note below).

1 Voting on Legislative Proposal: Griffith Institute

Explanatory note

The following Legislative Proposal submitted by Council under Part 2 of Congregation Regulations 2 of 2002 (Supplement (1) to Gazette No. 4633, 9 October 2001, p. 161), which is promoted on the recommendation of the Oriental Studies Board, transfers responsibility for the Griffith Institute for Egyptology, and the A.H. Gardiner Settlement for Egyptological Purposes, from the Ashmolean Museum to the faculty board. At the same time opportunity is taken to put the relevant provisions into modern drafting style, and to delete reference to an anonymous gift to the institute in 1967 which has now been spent.

WHEREAS it is expedient to amend the arrangements for management of the Griffith Institute and associated bequests, NOW the university of oxford, in exercise of the powers in that behalf conferred upon it by the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge Act, 1923, and of all other powers enabling it, enacts, subject to the approval of Her Majesty in Council, as follows.

In § 8 of Part 2 of Council Regulations 25 of 2002, concerning the trust funds for the Ashmolean Museum (Statutes, 2000, pp. 585--6, as renumbered by Decree (3) of 21 September 2000 and by the changes in regulations published on 14 November 2002, and redesignated as regulations by Decree (5) of 11 July 2002, Gazette, Vol. 131, p. 3; Vol. 132, p. 1461; Vol. 133, p. 404), under `Griffith Institute', delete items [1]–[3] and substitute:

1. The bequests of Professor and Mrs Griffith accepted by the University by Decree (2) of 25 January 1938 shall be applied for the purpose in the first place of furnishing and endowing a home or institute for Egyptological Study, and in the second place, after that purpose has been sufficiently accomplished, for the purpose of the expansion of the home or institute to Babylonian or other departments of archaeological research.

2. The institute shall be named the Griffith Institute in memory of the principal benefactors.

3. The institute and the net income of the Griffith Bequests shall be administered by the Board of the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

4. Regulations 2 and 3 above may be amended by Council.

1. The benefaction arising from the A.H. Gardiner Settlement for Egyptological Purposes of 10 March 1939 shall form a fund, the net income of which shall be expended for the general purposes of Egyptology.

2. The fund shall be administered by the Board of the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

3. Regulation 2 above may be amended by Council.'

2 Voting on Change in Congregation Regulations: Religious Services and Sermons

Explanatory note

The following change in regulations is promoted by Council, on the recommendation of the Committee for the Nomination of Select Preachers, in order to accommodate the wish of Queen's College to host the University Sermon on Trinity Sunday on an annual basis. The colleges that will be affected by these changes have been consulted and no major objection has been raised.

Text of Regulation

1 In regulation 6.10 of Congregation Regulations 3 of 2002 (Supplement (1) to Gazette No. 4612, 13 February 2002, p. 777), delete paragraph (6) and substitute: `(6) in Queen's College, on Trinity Sunday;

(7) in rotation, in one of those college and societies which have so agreed with the Committee for the Nomination of Select Preachers, on the fourth Sunday of Michaelmas Full Term and on the eighth Sunday of Hilary Full Term.'

2 This change shall be effective from 1 October 2003.
