Decrees

Council has made the following decrees, to come into effect on 9 November.

Decree (1): Division of the Faculty of Literae Humaniores into separate Faculties of Classics and of Philosophy

Decree (2): Abolition of the Committee for Archaeology

Explanatory note

No notice of opposition having been given, Mr Vice-Chancellor will declare carried, without holding the meeting of Congregation on 30 October, Statute (1) dividing the Faculty of Literae Humaniores into separate Faculties of Classics and of Philosophy, and Statute (3) abolishing the Committee for Archaeology, which were promulgated on 9 October (see `University Agenda' below). Council has accordingly made the following decrees, which give effect to consequential changes.

HUMANITIES BOARD

Decree

The Humanities Board has made the following decree, to come into effect on 9 November.

Decree (3): Composition of the Electoral Boards for the Camden Professorship of Ancient History, the Corpus Christi Professorship of the Latin Language and Literature, the Waynflete Professorship of Metaphysical Philosophy, the Nolloth Professorship of the Philosophy of the Christian Religion, and the King Alfonso XIII Professorship of Spanish Studies

Explanatory note

The following decree, made by the Humanities Board, changes the composition of the Electoral Boards for the Camden Professorship of Ancient History, the Corpus Christi Professorship of the Latin Language and Literature, the Waynflete Professorship of Metaphysical Philosophy, the Nolloth Professorship of the Philosophy of the Christian Religion, and the King Alfonso XIII Professorship of Spanish Studies to bring them into line with current practice. Clause 5 of the decree also permits Council to appoint an additional member of the Electoral Board for the Camden Professorship to fill the next vacancy, in order to ensure full coverage among the electors of the field of the chair. The college of association has concurred in the change in each case.

III, § 115, cl. 2, concerning the Camden Professor of Ancient History (Statutes, 2000, p. 433), § 172, cl. 2, concerning the Corpus Christi Professor of the Latin Language and Literature (p. 449), § 251, cl. 2, concerning the Nolloth Professor of the Philosophy of the Christian Religion (p. 484, as renumbered by Decree (1) of 7 June 2001, Gazette, Vol. 131, p. 1112), and § 254, cl. 2, concerning the Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy (p. 485, as renumbered by the same decree), in each case delete item (4) and substitute:

`(4), (5) two persons appointed by Council;

(6) a person appointed by the Humanities Board;'.

EDUCATIONAL POLICY AND STANDARDS COMMITTEE OF COUNCIL

Decree

The Educational Policy and Standards Committee of Council has made the following decree, to come into effect on 9 November.

Decree (4): Amendments to the decrees governing supervision of graduate students

Explanatory note

The following decree, made by the Educational Policy and Standards Committee of Council, after consultation with the Committee of Tutors for Graduates, amends the existing decrees governing supervision of graduate students so as to require supervisors to communicate the contents of their termly reports on their supervisees to the students concerned. The change to the existing arrangements, which already encourage supervisors to share the contents of their reports with their graduate students, is made partly to reflect the demands of the Data Protection Act and also to respond to the increased importance which graduate students (and external review bodies) place on there being a system of regular feedback on the progress of a student's studies.

In addition'.
