RHODES UNIVERSITY, SOUTH AFRICA

Hugh Le May Fellowship 2002

This fellowship is available in alternate years to applicants who wish to devote themselves to advanced (postdoctoral) work in one of the following subjects: Philosophy, Classics, Ancient, Medieval, or Modern History, Classical, Biblical, Medieval or Modern Languages, Political Theory, Law. Where there is no applicant of sufficient merit in any of the above subjects, the fellowship may be awarded to an applicant in some other subject falling within the Faculty of Humanities.

The fellowship is of three to four months' duration, consisting of a return economy air ticket to the fellow's place of residence, furnished university accommodation, and a small monthly cash stipend. The length of the fellowship may be extended by mutual agreement and subject to the availability of funds.

Hugh Kelly Fellowship 2003

This fellowship is awarded in alternate years to enable scientists (with at least a doctoral qualification) to devote themselves to advanced work in any of the following science departments of Rhodes University: Biochemistry and Microbiology, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Geology, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, Mathematical Statistics, Mathematics (Pure and Applied), Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physics and Electronics, Zoology and Entomology and the Institute for Water Research.

The value of the fellowship is approximately R66,000 (US$11,000) per annum, which includes the cost of a return economy class airfare from the fellow's place of residence.

Postdoctoral Fellowships

Several postdoctoral fellowships are available, which may be awarded for a minimum of one year in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal for a maximum of three years. Fellowships are available in all disciplines.

THE COMMONWEALTH FUND, NEW YORK

Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy 2002–3

These fellowships provide a unique opportunity for promising health policy researchers and practitioners (e.g. physicians, health services managers, government officials, and journalists) who are early in their career to spend six to twelve months in the United States conducting a policy-oriented research project and working with leading US health policy experts. Each fellowship will provide up to US$75,000 in support.
