COUNCIL OF THE UNIVERSITY

1 Decrees

Council has made the following decrees, to come into effect on 2 March.

Decree (1): Professorship of Indian History and Culture

Decree (2): Professorships

Explanatory note No notice of opposition having been given, Mr Vice-Chancellor will declare carried, at the meeting of Congregation on 20 February, Statute (1) establishing a Professorship of Indian History and Culture, and Statute (2) providing for provision for `statutory' professorships to be made in future solely by decree, which were promulgated on 6 February (see `University Agenda' below). Council has accordingly made the following decrees, which give effect to consequential changes.

Text of Decree (1)

[For text, see decree annexed to Statute from No. 4571, 11 January 2001.]

Text of Decree (2)

[For text, see decree annexed to Statute (2) from No. 4572, 18 January 2001.]

Decree (3): Academic posts in the Software Engineering Programme and the Mathematical Finance Programme

Explanatory note

Under normal provisions, university lecturers may be appointed for an initial period of five years, after which they shall be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age, except in certain specific circumstances laid down in the Decrees under which temporary university lecturers may be appointed for a period not exceeding five years to substitute for someone on leave or to meet urgent teaching requirements. It has been agreed with the Oxford AUT, however, that in other rare circumstances, i.e. where additional resources become available to support academic appointments but the funding is too limited to permit the establishment of permanent posts, fixed-term university lecturerships may be created by `notwithstanding' decree. Such circumstances apply to the Software Engineering Programme, run jointly by the Department for Continuing Education and the Computing Laboratory, and to the Mathematical Finance Programme, run jointly by the Department for Continuing Education and the Mathematical Institute. The following decree, made on the recommendation of the Personnel Committee and with the concurrence of the Continuing Education Board and the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Board, permits academic posts in the programmes to be held on a fixed-term basis.

Text of Decree (3)

Notwithstanding the provisions of Ch. VII, Sect. IV, § 3, cl. 3 (Statutes, 2000, p. 518), academic posts in the Software Engineering Programme and the Mathematical Finance Programme may be held on a fixed-term basis.
