Information on Research Funding

The University's Research Services Office (RSO) offers the following web-based resources for those looking for external research funding:

electronic Research Funding News (eRFN) (http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/rso/erin/)

This is a Web-based bulletin, updated weekly, of current research funding opportunities across all subject areas with forthcoming deadlines for applications. It includes an at-a-glance guide to deadlines and a searchable archive of previous issues.

Anyone wishing to receive a weekly e-mail reminder summarising the contents of the bulletin should e-mail to ellen.mcateer@admin.ox.ac.uk with the subject line `join eRFN mailing list'. Subscribers also receive monthly updates about the contents of the RSO Bulletin Board (http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/rso/oxonly/bboard.htm) which lists non-funding research-related information, such as details of conferences, training opportunities and changes in the policy of major research funding bodies.

Community of Science (http://www.cos.com)

The University subscribes to the `Funding Opportunities' service offered by the Community of Science (COS). This is a fully searchable database of grant-making organisations world-wide, providing information about research funding across all subject areas. Despite the misleading title, this source of information about funding opportunities also covers the social sciences and humanities.

This service may be accessed by any member of the University with an `ox.ac.uk' e-mail account.

Online research funding and information resources (http://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/rso/oxonly/Database.htm)

This page on the RSO Web-site collects together links to COS and other online databases and information services to which the University has access. These services provide information about current research funding opportunities and sponsors.

PRENDERGAST BEQUEST

Applications for grants from this fund are invited from men and women born in the Republic of Ireland whose parents are citizens of the Republic of Ireland, and who are in need of financial assistance. Funds may be awarded to both graduate and undergraduate students reading for a degree, or, in some circumstances, for a diploma, at the University of Oxford.

Financial assistance is only available to students who are already at the University or students who have received a firm offer of both a faculty and a college place for a one-year taught Master's course. With exception for such courses, awards are not normally made to students in their first year of study. The Bequest does not provide full scholarships for study at the University, but, in general, is used to support students in need of smaller sums for maintenance and for specific projects. Amounts do not usually exceed £2000 per annum.

The closing date for applications is 31 August. It is anticipated that applicants will be notified of the outcome in mid- to late September.
