CONFERMENT OF THE TITLE OF VISITING PROFESSOR

On the recommendation of the relevant faculty boards, the General Board has conferred the title of Visiting Professor in International Health on M.L. BENNISH (BA, MD Michigan State University), Director of the Wellcome Trust Research Centre in Durban, South Africa, for a period of three years from 1 February 2000, and has conferred the title of Visiting Professor in Palaeobiology on R.A. FORTEY, FRS (BA, PH.D., SC.D. Cambridge), Senior Principal Scientific Officer at the Natural History Museum, for a period of three years from 15 February 2000.

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

On the recommendation of the Clinical Medicine Board, the General Board has appointed R.M. FITZPATRICK, M.SC., University Lecturer (non-medical) in Medical Sociology and Fellow of Nuffield, as acting head of the Department of Public Health from 1 March 2000 until the appointment of a new Professor of Public Health.

RECOGNITION OF DISTINCTION: CHANGE OF TITLE

The title awarded to G. Stores, MA, Clinical Reader in Adolescent Psychiatry and Fellow of Linacre in the 1998--9 Recognition of Distinction exercise has been changed to Professor of Developmental Neuropsychiatry.

REVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MATERIALS

Under the University's procedure for the regular review of faculties and departments on an approximately ten-year cycle, the Department of Materials is to be reviewed this academic year. The terms of reference of the review are:

(a) to consider the provision and quality of teaching and research in the Department of Materials and the balance between the two, having regard to international standards of excellence;

(b) to review the organisational and management structures and facilities in the department, including such matters as academic staff planning, accommodation, IT provision, and staff and student recruitment;

(c) to consider the relationship between the department and cognate departments in the University;

(d) to make recommendations, bearing in mind the likely measure of available resources.
