Five Heads of new Academic Divisions announced


The five heads of the new Academic Divisions have now been announced. The heads will chair and act on behalf of the divisional board in which authority for the academic administration of the broad subject area is vested and will serve as a member of the major central bodies of the University, including the new Council.

Key objectives for the new heads will include the establishment of divisional structure, the development of research strategies, and the maintenance of inter- and intra-divisional links. Appointments will start no later than 1 October 2000.

Dr Ralph Walker (pictured left) will become Head of the Humanities Division, which includes the Faculties of English, Literae Humaniores, Modern History, Modern Languages, Music, Oriental Studies, Theology, Modern Middle Eastern Studies and Chinese Studies, the Ruskin School, and Comparative Philology and General Linguistics. Dr Walker is Fellow and Tutor in Philosophy at Magdalen College, and is currently Chairman of the General Board.


Professor Peter Newell (pictured left) will become Head of the Life and Environmental Sciences Division, which includes Anthropology, Biochemistry, Geography, Plant Sciences, Zoology, and Archaeology. Professor Newell is currently a Professor of Biochemistry, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, and a Professorial Fellow of St Peter's College.





Professor Brian Cantor (pictured left) has been appointed Head of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division. Professor Cantor joined the University in 1981 and holds the Cookson chair in Materials. He is a Professorial Fellow of St Catherine's College and was appointed Head of the Department of Materials in 1995.





Dr Ken Fleming will become Head of the Division of Medical Sciences, which includes Clinical Medicine, Physiological Sciences, and Psychology. Dr Fleming is a Fellow of Green College, and currently Dean of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine, Chairman of the Board of the Faculty of Clinical Medicine and a Clinical Reader in Pathology.

Mr Donald Hay has been appointed Head of the Division of Social Sciences, which will include Law, Management Studies, Social Studies, Educational Studies, Queen Elizabeth House, and the bulk of Area Studies. Mr Hay has been a CUF Lecturer in Economics and Fellow and Tutor in Economics at Jesus College since 1970. He is currently Chairman of the Social Studies Board.
