University professor nominated as Royal Society president


Sir Robert May, Fellow of Merton College and Royal Society Research Professor at the Department of Zoology, has been nominated by the Council of the Royal Society for the office of President. Sir Robert is currently on leave of absence from the University as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government.

The five-year term of the current President, Sir Aaron Klug, OM, who has been nominated as one of the honorands for this year's Encaenia, ends on 30 November, 2000. The formal Royal Society election will take place in April, with the result announced on 13 July. Sir Robert steps down as Chief Scientific Adviser in September, and will return to research at the University.
