Ruskin today

PROFESSOR ROBERT HEWISON, University of Lancaster, Slade Professor of Fine Art 1999–2000, will deliver the Slade Lectures in Hilary Term 2000 in the Lecture Theatre, the University Museum of Natural History. The inaugural lecture will be given at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, 19 January, to be followed by a further seven lectures, which will be given at 5 p.m. on Thursdays, from 27 January to 9 March.

The lectures, which are open to the public, will consider in particular Ruskin's role as a critic of the art of his own day.

H.E. MR KOFI ANNAN, Secretary General of the United Nations, will lecture at 11 a.m. on Monday, 28 June, in the Sheldonian Theatre.

Admission will be by ticket only. Tickets may be obtained from the Centre Secretary, Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, George Street, Oxford OX1 2AR.

Somerville College Appeal: luncheon to celebrate the life and work of Mary Somerville

DR A. CHAPMAN will lecture following the luncheon, to be held at 12 noon for 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, 26 June, in Somerville College.

Subject: `Mary Somerville (1780–1872) and her contribution to the "grand amateur" tradition of British science.'

Annual General Meeting

The fifty-fourth Annual General Meeting of the Friends of the Bodleian will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, 24 June, in the Sheldonian Theatre. The Vice-Chancellor will take the chair.

After the formal business, PROFESSOR JON STALLWORTHY will address the meeting. Subject: `Confessions of a literary resurrection man.'
