(b) The tables in this report are based on the 9,340 candidates who applied to Oxford in 1997 and on the 3,308 places gained by those candidates. Of the candidates 8,415 were applying for entry in October 1998, the remaining 925 applied for deferred entry until 1999. Of the 3,308 final acceptances, 2,953 were for entry in October 1998, the remaining 355 were for deferred entry until October 1999.
(c) Graduates of other universities and candidates who applied through UCAS but did not complete and Oxford application form are excluded from these tables.
(d) In this report figures for the most recent year relate to the position in September 1998, after the publication of A-level and other examinations where acceptances are finalised. The only exception is Table 3 where the figures in the final column relate specifically to offers.

*The Oxford and Cambridge (OCB) now incorporates the Cambridge Local Examination Syndicate (UCLES) and the Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations (UODLE).
In Table 4 one Board is assigned to each candidate. Where candidates have taken A levels with more than one Board, they are assigned the Board with which they took the majority of their subjects; and if candidates took the same number of A levels with each of several Boards, they are assigned to the Board named first on their form.

Candidates are given the opportunity of applying to Oxford without having to name a college of preference. A total of 854candidates submitted open applications. The missing college of preference was allocated by the Admissions Office computer which took into account the application patterns produced by the candidates who had named a college. 101 of the 854 who submitted open applications gained places, which is an acceptance rate of 11.8 per cent. All colleges were allocated some open application candidates; eight were allocated fewer than 10, six were allocated between 10 and 20, ten were allocated between 21 and 50, and three were allocated between 50 and 100. One college received 140 allocated candidates.
