Botanic Garden boost for links with local schools : The Botanic Garden and university museums are attracting increasing numbers of local schoolchildren as part of a concerted effort to make displays and information more accessible.

Oxford Professor to join Bank of England : John Vickers, Drummond Professor of Political Economy since 1991, has been appointed Chief Economist and Executive Director of the Bank of England.

Royal Navy links to grow after Hudson bequest : A call to strengthen links between the Royal Navy and the University has come from Admiral Sir Jock Slater, GCB, LVO, ADC, First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff, during a visit to Oxford on 13 November.

New Professor of European Law : Professor Stephen Weatherill, currently Jean Monnet Professor of European Law at the University of Nottingham, has been appointed to the newly-created Jacques Delors Professorship of European Community Law, established with the generous support of the European Union.

New post at Socio-Legal Centre : A dinner to celebrate the contribution of Dr Peter North, Principal of Jesus College and former Vice-Chancellor, to the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies and to raise funds for the creation of a new post in his honour was held at the Hall of the Inner Temple in London.

Local MP defends fee in Commons debate : Arguments for and against cutting college fees at Oxford and Cambridge were put to the Education Minister, Dr Kim Howells, in an adjournment debate in the House of Commons on Wednesday 19 November.
