Call for UN to strive harder on human rights : The need for fresh approaches in protecting human rights, as the United Nations approaches its 50th anniversary of the Universal Declartion of Human Rights in 1998, was the theme of the 1997 Romanes Lecture given by Mrs Mary Robinson, the new UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Research income tops £107m last year : Research income to the University from research councils, UK and overseas industry and government topped £107 million last year—including a significant jump in the amount invested by British industry.

Peers warn of damage to Oxford and Cambridge if college fees go : Peers from all political parties mounted a staunch defence of the college fee at Oxford and Cambridge during a four-hour debate on the future of Oxbridge funding in the House of Lords on Wednesday, 12 November.

New head for office in North America : Mr Darryl C. Brown has taken over as the new Director of the University's North American Office, which is responsible for fund-raising and outreach in the US and Canada.
