Decree (1): Membership of the Information Technology (IT) Committee

Explanatory note

The following decree, made on the recommendation of the IT Committee and the Libraries Committee and with the concurrence of the General Board, amends the clause governing membership of the former committee so as to harmonise the terms on which provision is made for cross-representation on the two committees.

Text of Decree (1)

In Ch. II, Sect. ii, § 5, cl. 1 (Statutes, 1997, p. 231), delete item (7) and substitute: `(7) the Chairman of the Libraries Committee or his or her nominee;'.

Decree (2): Transfer to the General Board of authority to appoint heads of department, sub-department, etc.

Explanatory note

The following decree gives the General Board authority to appoint heads of department, sub-department, etc. Under its existing powers, the Board may then itself delegate authority for decisions in this area to its Appointments Committee, which would refer cases of doubt or difficulty to the Board with a recommendation, and the Board itself would refer any appropriately complex or sensitive matters to Council. The decree covers changes to the general provisions (Statutes, 1997, p. 389) as well as changes to particular provisions relating to individual departments.

Decree (3): Honour School of Modern Languages

Explanatory note

The following decree, made on the recommendation of the Modern Languages Board and with the concurrence of the General Board, makes a minor change to the decree governing the Honour School of Modern Languages consequential upon more substantial changes in regulations.

Associated changes in regulations are set out in `Examinations and Boards' below.

Decree (4): Examiners for the Honour Schools of Natural Science (Metallurgy and Science of Materials) and of Materials, Economics, and Management

Explanatory note

The following decree, made on the recommendation of the Physical Sciences Board and with the concurrence of the General Board, permits external examiners for the Honour School of Natural Science (Metallurgy and Science of Materials) and the Honour School of Materials, Economics, and Management to be appointed for four rather than two years, in order to allow them to follow two cohorts of candidates through both parts of the Second Public Examination. This change arises from a recommendation in the recent Quality Assessment Report on Materials.

Decree (5): Appointments to the Audit Committee

Notwithstanding the provisions of Ch. II, Sect. i, § 5, cl. 1 (Statutes, 1997, p. 216), Council may appoint one member of the Audit Committee to serve for one year, and one member to serve for two years, from the first day of Trinity Term 1998, in order to procure a regular subsequent rotation of appointments.
