Chinese gallery to be added to Ashmolean : The Ashmolean Museum is to house the first purpose-built Chinese painting gallery in the country.

First Media Broadcast Professor appointed : Mr David Elstein, Chief Executive of Channel 5 Broadcasting, has been appointed as the first News International Visiting Professor in Broadcast Media for the academic year 1998–9.

Amazonian student vows to help his tribe face future : A visiting student from a small Amazonian tribe in Peru, who won a scholarship to Oxford, has set up an institute to help other members of his tribe to progress.

Profiteering is `not the key' to business success : The view that business and business people are or should be selfish in motive, narrow in outlook, and instrumental in behaviour was described as `nonsense' by Professor John Kay, Peter Moores Director of the Said Business School.

Professor Davies moves to Chair of Anatomy : Professor Kay Davies, Professor of Genetics at the University and Fellow of Keble College since 1995, has been appointed Dr Lee's Professor of Anatomy.

Oxford Transport Strategy: Discussion of the University's objection to the City Council's Oxford Transport Strategy at the current public inquiry has been postponed until Friday 20 February. (See Gazette 29 January 1998, page 661).

National Heritage appointment: Dr Eric Anderson, Rector of Lincoln College, has been appointed Chairman of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, which awards lottery grants of £250 million a year.

Understanding of Science awards: Academics at the Department of Physics are among a group from six institutions which has won one of the first National Awards for the Public Understanding of Science and Technology. The £80,000 grant will be used to develop a national resource of demonstrations and displays in particle physics.
