New Secretary for OUP

The Delegates of the Oxford University Press (OUP) have appointed Mr Henry Reece to be Chief Executive and Secretary to the Delegates, with effect from 27 July 1998. He will succeed Mr James Arnold-Baker who has held the position for five years.

Mr Reece (pictured left) is currently Managing Director of Financial Times Professional Ltd., a part of Pearson plc. He brings to OUP a wide range of experience in international publishing in the UK, Europe, and the USA.

Mr Reece studied Modern History at the University of Bristol, where he gained a First in 1974, and at St John's College, Oxford, where he was awarded a D.Phil. in 1977.

After teaching early modern history for two years at the University of Exeter (1977–9), he joined Simon and Schuster where he became successively Academic Sales Manager for Prentice-Hall International; UK Sales Manager and Assistant Vice-President for Simon and Schuster International; and Senior Editor and Executive Editor, Allyn and Bacon.

In 1991 he joined Pearson plc as Publishing Director, and later Managing Director of Pitman Publishing. In 1994 he became Executive Director, Longman Group Ltd, and in 1995 Executive Director of Pearson Professional Ltd. Since 1997 he has been Managing Director of Financial Times Professional Ltd.

OUP is the world's largest university press. Its diverse publishing programme includes scholarly works in all academic disciplines.

Turnover in 1996–7 was more than £278 million, with some 4,800 new titles published world-wide, adding to a back-list of more than 30,000 titles. OUP is a strong international publisher, with over 80 per cent of its turnover coming from outside the UK, generated by some 3,400 employees in over 50 countries.
