PROFESSORSHIP OF COMPUTING SCIENCE

RICHARD PEIRCE BRENT (B.SC., D.SC. Monash, MS, PH.D. Stanford), Professor of Computing Sciences, Research School of Information and Engineering, Australian National University, has been appointed to the professorship with effect from 1 March 1998.

Professor Brent will be a fellow of St Hugh's College.

FIXED-TERM PROFESSORSHIP OF FRENCH STUDIES

ALAIN VIALA (Docteur ès Lettres, Doctorat d'État), Professeur à l'Université de Paris III, has been appointed to the professorship for five years with effect from a date to be arranged.

Professor Viala will be a fellow of Wadham College.

CONFERMENT AND RECONFERMENT OF THE TITLE OF VISITING PROFESSOR

On the recommendation of the General Board and the relevant faculty boards, Council has conferred the title of Visiting Professor in Materials on B.L. EYRE, F.ENG. (D.SC. Surrey), Deputy Chairman of AEA Technology, for a period of two years from 1 October 1997, and has conferred the title of Visiting Professor in Glycobiology on R.B. PAREKH, D.PHIL., Senior Vice-President of Research and Research Director for Oxford Glycoscience (UK) Ltd., for a period of three years with immediate effect, and has reconferred the title of Visiting Professor in Ornithology on I. NEWTON, FRS, D.PHIL., D.SC. (B.SC. Bristol), for a further period of five years until 30 June 2002.

CLOSURE OF THE RADCLIFFE SCIENCE LIBRARY AND DISRUPTION TO BODLEIAN LIBRARY ELECTRONIC SERVICES

On Friday, 15 August, the Radcliffe Science Library will not open until 12 noon, because of essential maintenance to the high voltage switchgear serving it and neighbouring buildings.

All electronic services operated from the Radcliffe Science Library will be unavailable during the period of electrical shutdown (8 a.m.–12 noon). These include the Bodleian Database Network, ERL, and BRIAN.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY RESOURCES CENTRE

The Educational Technology Resources Centre, 37 Wellington Square, will be closed from 4 August to 29 August inclusive. Some staff may be available, but the department's services will not be available during this time.
