Japan selects Oxford for top physics project : Oxford physicists will play a leading role in a new £12 million UK– Japanese co-operative research project, funded by the Japan Science and Technology Corporation (JSTC).

Ever ready with a wise and pithy phrase : Oxford is a link for many of the new authors providing new or rediscovered sayings which feature in the fourth edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, just published by Oxford University Press.

Ukrainian MPs seek Oxford advice : Two prominent members of the Ukranian Parliament, the Supreme Rada, visited Oxford on 28–9 November to give a seminar at All Souls College, and take part in meetings in which they sought advice from Oxford academics on legislative drafts linked to the country's new constitutional arrangements.

Budget impact on the University : In his Budget speech on 26 November, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Kenneth Clarke, announced an additional £200 million for higher education over the next two years, including a £20 million challenge fund for science equipment.

Materials earns high marks for teaching : The Department of Materials has achieved a total score of 23 out of a maximum of 24 in its Higher Education Funding Council for England teaching quality assessment.

Oxford success in equipment research awards : Four Oxford University research groups, one in materials, and three in biochemistry, have won more than £1.3m in additional funding for equipment in the 1996 national Joint Research Equipment Initiative.

Chair goes to neural networks expert : Dr Lionel Tarassenko, University Lecturer in Engineering Science and a Fellow of St Hugh's College since 1988, has been appointed to the Professorship of Electrical and Electronic Engineering from 1 October 1997.
