ECU studies changes in UK climate : The University's Environmental Change Unit (ECU), established six years ago, has been commissioned by the Department of the Environment to co-ordinate an innovative assessment of the effects of climate change in the UK.

National, local, and University elections : Mr Tony Blair, who read law at St John's College (1972–5), has become the twenty-fifth Prime Minister educated at Oxford since the title first come into usage in 1782.

Faculty of Modern Languages rated `excellent' : The Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages has achieved an overall rating of `excellent' in the teaching quality assessment completed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, scoring a total of 21 out of a possible 24 points.

Freudian focus for Visiting Professor : Professor Peter Brooks, Chester D. Tripp Professor of Humanities and Professor of French and Comparative Literature at Yale University, has been appointed to the George Eastmam Visiting Professorship for 1998-9, attached to Balliol College.

Scientist honoured for virus research : An Oxford scientist, Dr Martin Nowak, is to be awarded the prestigious Weldon Memorial Prize for 1996, for his work on the evolution of viruses and other pathogens during individual infections.

Laser success celebrated at Isis seminar : ISIS Innovation Ltd., the University's technology transfer company, held the twenty-first meeting of the Oxford Innovation Society on 20 March.

Death of Lord Taylor: The Rt. Hon. The Lord Taylor of Gosforth, PC, the former Lord Chief Justice of England, who was due to receive the Degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa, at Encaenia, died on 28 April.

Approval for Sackler Library: The proposed Sackler Library, next to the Ashmolean Museum, has been recommended unanimously for planning permission by Oxford City Council planning committee, and now awaits approval from the Department of the Environment. The Library is partly funded by the Dr Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation.

Correction: Dr J.N. Hiddleston was the former Director of Isis Innovation, and not Dr J.A. Hiddleston of Exeter College, as stated in last week's Gazette.
