Oppenheimer Fund

The Oppenheimer Fund provides grants to assist the academic exchange of senior members between the University of Oxford on the one hand and universities and similar institutions of higher education in the Republic of South Africa on the other. Applications are invited from senior members of the University who wish to visit one or more universities in South Africa or who wish to invite a staff member from a South African university to Oxford. Applications for support from the fund should include a statement of the purpose of the proposed visit, duration of the visit and the estimated cost, details of any other available sources of funding, and, in the case of visit to Oxford, full details of the staff member it is proposed to invite. Applications should be sent to the International Office, University Offices, Wellington Square, by 30 November.

Polish Government Postgraduate Scholarships 1996–7

The Polish Cultural Institute and the Ministry of National Education are offering scholarships for postgraduate study in Poland in 1996–7. Awards are tenable in the fields of sciences, humanities, and arts.

British citizens only are eligible to apply. Candidates should have at least a BA degree (or equivalent) and should be under thirty-five years of age when they begin their studies in Poland.

The applications will be considered by a joint British/Polish selection committee and short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview in February/March 1996.

Italian Government Scholarships and Grants 1996–7

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs offers British citizens a number of awards for the academic year 1996–7 for study at Italian institutions in Italy. Summer bursaries/short-term research grants (1 July–31 October 1997) are available for courses in any subject in Italian, short courses at art academies and music conservatories. Long-term scholarships/research grants (1 November 1996–30 June 1997) are available for postgraduate courses (a master's degree or its equivalent is required) and research (for a maximum of eight months. Candidates must provide evidence of registration at a UK university). For long-term grants candidates must have a good knowledge of Italian.

The value of the awards is 1 million lire per month. You will be required to pay for your own travel fares and enrolment fees. Students must arrange and pay for their own accommodation.

Preference will be given to researchers on Italian history, literature, and art, and to students and graduates who intend to become teachers of Italian in the UK.
