UK government funding
Detailed below is the financial support Home and EU students can access from the UK goverment to fund the cost of University.
Support for Home students
Home students can apply for a student loan for the full amount of your University tuition fees, irrespective of your household income. This will be paid directly to the University on your behalf by the Student Loans Company (SLC).
You can also apply for help with living costs in the form of maintenance grants and loans. How much money you can get for each will depend upon where you live and the level of your household income (RHI). The maximum support is a combination of loan and grant so if you receive a grant you won’t be eligible for the full loan.

Support for EU students
If you are from another EU country you will normally be eligible for a UK government loan to cover your tuition fees. For more information visit the Student Finance Services EU website.
Additionally, if you have been resident in the UK for three years or more before the start date of your proposed course, you might be eligible for the same funding as a UK student. If you think this might apply to you please contact the regional funding agency for the area of the UK in which you live (see section above). How to apply
English students will be able to apply to Student Finance England for funding for 2012/13 from January 2012. This page will be updated with exact details of when applications will open once this is known.
We will also update this page once the applications open for other regions of the UK and the EU.
Repayment of loans
If you take out any loan for student support you will not have to start repaying until you have left your course. You only repay the loan when you are earning more than £15,000 and it will be taken directly from your salary. More details can be found at Student Loans Company repayment website.
Maintenance Loan Cancellation for Welsh Students
Students who took out a maintenance loan from Student Finance Wales in 2010/11 or 2011/12 may be eligible to receive a partial loan cancellation of up to £1500. To qualify, these students must:
- Have no outstanding charges, costs, expenses or penalties in relation to the loan or be in breach of the loan agreement.
- Have received all outstanding loan payments due to them for either 2010/11 or 2011/12
- Have made their first loan repayment, either through an employer or direct to the SLC voluntarily
There is no cut off date for making a repayment in order to qualify for partial cancellation. When the first repayment is made, any partial cancellation will automatically be calculated and applied to the student’s balance. The total amount of cancelled loan will depend on:
- The amount of the first repayment
- The amount of maintenance loan taken out
- The total balance left at the time of repayment
For more information, and some examples, visit Student Loans Company repayment website.
