Year abroad information for UK students who started their course before 2012
If you are studying single or joint honours Modern Languages, Oriental Studies, or Jurisprudence (Law with Law Studies in Europe) at undergraduate level, you may spend a year of your course studying or working abroad.
Tuition fee and support
The year abroad tuition fee 2013/14 for UK students who started their course before 2012 will be £1,725. Students will be eligible to access a loan for the full amount of their tuition fee from their regional funding agency. Students who spend a full year abroad under the Erasmus programme may be eligible for their year abroad tuition fee to be waived.
Living costs and support
UK students might be eligible for support from the government and the University depending on their household income and how they are spending their year abroad.
| Year abroad activity | Maintenance loan | Maintenance grant | Oxford Opportunity Bursary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-time overseas study | Available although amount depends on household income | Available depending on household income | Available depending on household income |
| Paid or unpaid full year Erasmus work placement | Available although amount depends on household income | Available depending on household income | Available depending on household income |
| Paid or unpaid non-Erasmus work placement | Reduced rate available | Not available | Not available |
Full details of the support available can be found on the relevant pages for English, Northern Irish, Scottish and Welsh students. In order to access more than the basic level of maintenance loan, students should be financially assessed in their funding application to their regional funding agency; the University uses the household income figure which is calculated in this assessment to allocate its own funding.
Students on the Erasmus programme will also be eligible for an additional grant towards their living costs.
