LERU Bright Conference

League of European Research Universities (LERU)

The League of European Research Universities (LERU) is an association of 21 leading research-intensive universities that share the values of high quality teaching within an environment of internationally competitive research.

Founded in 2002, LERU advocates education through an awareness of the frontiers of human understanding; the creation of new knowledge through basic research, which is the ultimate source of innovation in society; and the promotion of research across a broad front in partnership with industry and society at large.

Bright Conference

The Bright Students’ Conference is an annual gathering of students from member universities. The conference, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, aims to provide an environment in which excellent students can focus on themes crucial to their education and cultural development, as field specialists and stakeholders of the Europe of tomorrow.

While LERU was founded to enhance the cooperation between Europe’s top research universities, the purpose of the Bright Conference is to develop a strong network between Europe’s brightest students and to offer them a platform on which they can discuss politically, socially and intellectually challenging topics that are shaping our present and future.

2013 Conference

This year's conference will take place from 12 to 16 August and is being hosted by Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (in cooperation with the Université de Strasbourg). The theme is Energy Transition in the 21st Century. This is based on the fact that in many European countries, the energy sector is shifting from an emphasis on oil, coal and nuclear energy towards wind, solar, water and biofuel technology. The conference will have a multidisciplinary approach by setting up working groups to discuss fundamental questions relating to energy transition. More detailed information is available at http://www.bright2013.uni-freiburg.de.

Funding

The conference fee is €50, which does not include travel costs. Up to four bursaries of between £100 and £200 are available for students attending the conference. The funding for these bursaries has been provided by the University's Alumni Association.
