Oppenheimer Fund - Academic Exchanges
Harry Frederick Oppenheimer was a noted South African businessman, philanthropist, and opponent of apartheid. In 1993 he endowed the Oppenheimer Fund at Oxford University. The Fund promotes links between the University of Oxford and South African Universities.
It does this by supporting academic exchanges between Oxford and South Africa, and assisting South African students wishing to pursue graduate study at Oxford.
Academic exchanges
Applications are invited from senior members of the University who wish either to visit one or more universities in South Africa or to senior members of South African universities who wish to visit Oxford. Exchange applications from graduate students will not normally be considered.
Grants may be awarded to assist with living expenses for a maximum of three months. Visits for the sole purpose of attending a conference (or similar short event) will not normally be eligible for support from the Fund.
The maximum grant level is currently up to £1200 per month for subsistence for those going to South Africa or £1400 for those coming to Oxford. Additionally, up to £850 may be given to assist with the cost of travel between Oxford and South Africa.
Applications for grants from the Fund should include:
- A statement of the purpose of the proposed visit. This should give an outline of the research to be carried out during the visit and should be summarised in terms accessible to a layperson;
- Duration and estimated costs, including details of any other available sources of funding;
- A curriculum vitae;
- A letter of support from the institution in South Africa you will be visiting, or a letter of support from your host in Oxford as appropriate.
For visitors to Oxford, your host should also confirm in the letter that they will assist in arranging suitable affiliation to a college/department and access to any necessary research materials. The host should also assist in finding you accommodation in Oxford.
The Oppenheimer Fund accepts applications twice a year. The next deadline for applications will be Friday 8th November 2013. Applications and any enquiries about the Fund should be sent to:
Annette Miller, Graduate Admissions and Funding, University Offices, Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JD; annette.miller@admin.ox.ac.uk
Graduate Scholarships
The Oppenheimer Fund also supports scholarships for students from South Africa to study graduate courses at the University of Oxford. Further details are available on our scholarships webpage.
