The Regency era was one of tumult and change, socially, politically and gastronomically. One of publisher John Murray II's biggest success stories was Maria Rundell's New System of Domestic Cookery, first published in 1806, and in print until at least 1911. It was pithy, original and very, very good, and many of the recipes still stand out today. This talk will put the book and its author into their culinary context, as well as shining a light on how a collection of recipes written before raising agents, packet gelatine, food mixers and fridges could be republished, without significant alteration, for over a hundred years - but is now largely forgotten.
