Some of our most direct evidence for the ancient world consists of documents that survive on papyrus or stone. But how do we get from an ancient I.O.U. to a conclusion about the world in which the writer lived? What assumptions are involved, and where do reasonable scholars disagree? There will be two short talks followed by discussion with the audience, and participants will be encouraged to continue the discussion afterwards over supper in Hall. All welcome.
