The Spanish Civil War polarised opinion in the cultural and intellectual world just as much as it divided political opinion. For many writers and artists the Civil War was a “great cause”, a decisive struggle between fascism and democracy, yet Franco’s side also attracted influential supporters. This day school will look at recent research into the intellectuals who went to Spain during the Civil War, whether to observe, to report on their experiences, or to fight for their ideals.
