Listen to Rubini, Thalberg or Damoreau,
Or Gallay's horn which in turn combines
The songs of love, war and melancholy;
You will know that their arts are the most beautiful.
from A Smile - Sonnet Revue et gazette, 1835.
Considered the last great natural horn virtuoso Jacques-François Gallay was ranked alongside the top instrumentalists of 19th century France. This recital, which gives a taste of Scott and Devine’s forthcoming disc (Resonus Classics), includes works by Gallay and his contemporaries, music influenced by both opera and lieder repertoire which supports Gallay’s assertion that the natural horn was "another voice which sings".
