The recently rediscovered seventeenth-century ’Selden Map of China’ in the Bodleian archives casts new light on the history of cartography and Ming China’s involvement in a hitherto unknown period of mapmaking. Professor Jerry Brotton explores the remarkable story of the map, its rediscovery and what it tells us about not only the role of Ming China in early mapmaking, but also the wider context of non-western cartography in the medieval and Renaissance periods.
